Normally I feel bad when people hurt their cars, but this...

This is why snorkels are a good idea.

I was rooting the little Saturn on! Little thing showed the E Series how to get shit done...then it failed...

Funny thing about snorkels, they were invented for dust, not water.

The saturn made me laugh, those things are designed to pretty much be water scoops.

Well, most snorkels on the market were anyways. I would like to see a comparison of which can be used for actual water crossings and what else would need to be done (breathers, etc.).

I know its often said that factory units are not meant for water crossing because they are multipiece, Safari is one piece for the purpose of water. There are, as you point out, other considerations too, like electrical radiator fans and breathers. The moral of the story is that gas engines don’t like water, but they don’t get destroyed as easily as diesels do when they do drink.

There was a park my friends and I used to hang out at in high school that had a small river with two boat launches facing each other from either side. This basically resulted in a river you could drive through. The water was about 2-2,5’ deep and actually driving from one launch to the other would save you a significant amount of driving time over taking normal roads.
I took my trusty S-10 Blazer through there numerous times, and actually had water come over my hood at times (not smart I know, but I was 17). It only died on me once in the water, but after I gave it some time, it fired right back up.
In hindsight I honestly don’t know how I managed to avoid hydrolocking that thing.

yeah, I've read that a mechanical fan is the last thing you want in a water crossing.

Trucks like ours have clutched fans that stall under high load so they usually don’t cause a problem, but they still can.

True dat. I scuttled the Series once (petrol) and the engine took a drink, burnt out one of the points, but she kept on moving. Haven’t forded anything deep in the Defender yet because it’s my primary work vehicle and a bent conrod is not conducive to my income.

This is why I stay out of the deep water as much as possible. Not worth it.

See, I was on the opposite side... you see an E-Series stall right in front of you, but you decide, in your much-lower Saturn, that you obviously know what’s up, and decide to just go around?
And if you’ll notice, that Saturn was fucking floating... Not sure where that water is draining toward, but guaranteed, the car was no longer his to control, and it continued to drift with the stream after the video ended.
Assholes like this become casualties.

Oh yes, I agree with everything you said there! I just thought it was amazing how the lower Saturn somehow kept running for longer despite the fact that the engine had to be sucking in some water long before it died.
And that floating stuff was scary. That’s one heck of a lightweight car. On the plus side, the water was still shallow enough for the driver to hop out and waddle away in shame.
